Spring Wildflowers: Blue Flax

Blue flax (Linum lewisii) is a vibrant spring wildflower that is easy to spot and identify.

Two blue flax flowers bloom in front of a blurred green and brown background. The flowers are light blue-violet with bright yellow centers.

Blue flax has five petals (which can be any shade of blue or purple) and delicate green leaves. They generally grow in semi-desert, foothills, montane, or subalpine habitats, but are also commonly found in dry roadside areas, which is where I have previously observed them.

We can expect to see blue flax growing by mid-March, and they flower until fall.
